January sales: a bargain-hunter's guide
Adriaane Pielou gives advice on how to tackle the
upcoming January sales in Paris, Milan and New York.
Paris
"The January sales aren't as big a deal in Paris as in London," says Danièle Ryman, the Parisian-born,
London-based aromatherapist and author.
"No French person would sleep all night outside Galeries Lafayette the way English people do outside Harrods, for instance. French people don't rush to buy 'a bargain'; they want to examine each item, inspect it thoroughly, try it on. Also, the sales start later than in London, and on a date set by law. By the time they begin, usually in the first or second week of January, people are looking forward to the new spring collections. Instead of clothes, often people buy bed linen and other things for the home.''
All the more clothes for us, then, but while the best department stores - Galeries Lafayette, Printemps and Bon Marché - are hectic at sales time, quieter, small boutiques often yield better buys.
Getting there
By Eurostar, the journey from St Pancras, London, to Gare du Nord now takes about 2hrs 25mins. With the first departure at 6.55am and the last train back leaving Gare du Nord at 9.13pm, you can easily go for the day (from £59 return).

It’s a fact of life that skin starts to sag as we get older. The upper arms are no exception. If this is one of your sensitive spots, try this massage oil.
Exercise such as walking, running and swimming, can help tone and firm, and gentle upward massage will help banish cellulite by encouraging lymphatic drainage.
Massage oil for the upper arms
45ml (3 tbspn) jojoba oil
10ml (1 dspn) rose masqueta oil
1 capsule wheatgerm oil
1 capsule evening primrose oil
3 drops essential oil of either rose or jasmine
5 drops essential oil of lavender
4 drops essential oil of either bois de rose or lemon
100ml bottle
Mix together in the bottle. After a bath or shower, use the oil to massage the triceps muscle from the elbow upwards. This oil will keep for up to two months.

How to combat City Skin

Put a glow back into your cheeks
FACIAL MASSAGE
Facial massage improves circulation and helps eliminate toxins from the complexion. Aromatherapy pioneer Danièle Ryman suggests a nightly facial massage.
• Secure hair back from face.
• Using the pads of your first and middle fingers, and starting between the brows, massage out towards the temples using long, smooth movements. Stop at the top of the middle of the brows and press firmly. Stop again at the outer corner of the brows and press firmly. Move up the forehead and repeat the movements, covering the whole forehead.
• Slide your fingers down your nose and press gently on the sinus pressure points.
• Put your fingers under your cheekbones and move towards the ear. Move fingers along the bone and press firmly at three points along the cheekbone, between where you started and just below the temples.
• Holding skin around the eyes taut with the fingers of one hand, use the ring finger of the other hand to massage lightly round the orbital bone of the eye, making three circles in each direction.
• Holding the mouth slightly taut with the fingers of one hand, massage lightly in a circular direction around the lips using the first two fingers of the other hand, then reverse direction. Swop hands, 'mirroring' these movements.
• Using your first two fingers, press the pressure point
• The 21st Century Beauty Bible by Sarah Stacey and Josephine Fairley is published by Kyle Cathie at £25.

DON’T GET STRESSED
Nobody wants to wake up to a spot on the day of a big event, especially your wedding day.
Aromatherapist Daniele Ryman, says “Most people tend to have greasy skin around the time of their wedding due to stress and anxiety.
"So try using peppermint tea as a toner, after you have cleansed your skin. using fresh mint leaves add boiling water and leave for five minutes. When the tea has cooled down, use some on a cotton wool pad or a small sponge.
"Apply a few times to your face and dry with a tissue - this is a simple thing, but can help. If you have dry skin, use chamomile instead of peppermint.”

The secret of natural
beauty: Essential oils
that will keep you looking younger for longer
The beauty industry appears to be at a crossroads.
On one hand, we have never been able to harness the potential
of so much technology in terms of ingredients and techniques available
to us.
On the other, despite all the exciting possibilities offered by
cosmeceuticals, non-invasive procedures and so forth, there's a
distinct concern that the long-term effects and unresearched side-effects
could actually end up doing us more harm than good.
