The best tips to beat jetlag

airplaneJetlag is the scourge of modern-day travel. Flying off into the sunset is meant to be one of life’s great pleasures of adventure and romance, but 3 days (or more depending on time zones) of unhappy recovery time is too long for a short holiday. Most people nowadays will experience some ill effects from flying long haul and jetlag is an increasing problem for many families. Pressure from schedules, delays, cancellations, anxieties on take-off and landing, dehydration, sleep disturbance and general fatigue all seem to go hand-in-hand with long flights.

Essential oils can play a great part in travel - after all, they have a relaxing and de-stressing action, are easy to use and smell wonderful. Their antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties are useful for fending off viruses, and most of all, they help to rebalance the body clock.

There are a number of things you can do to beat the effects of jetlag:

  1. Start exercising a few weeks before the flight. Jogging, swimming and aerobics will strengthen your muscles and ease the pain of sitting for long periods.
  2. Arrive at the airport in good time so you don’t get stressed.
  3. Request an aisle seat so you can get up and walk around easily - this is important as it will stretch the muscles and improve the circulation. Put a small suitcase or bag under your feet to elevate them, also improving circulation. Don’t cross your legs. Wear comfortable socks or slippers.
  4. If you have space - massage or squeeze your feet from time to time (or even better, get someone to do it for you!).
  5. Remember to set your watch to the time of your destination so you can try to adapt straight away. Forget about the time at home!
  6. Go easy on the alcohol as it will dehydrate and can be one of the biggest causes of jetlag. Drink a lot of water and don’t eat too much - fruit is the best as it is easily digested. Avoid eating foods that will bloat your stomach and cause flatulence like broccoli, beans, cauliflower and peas.
  7. The recycled, germ-filled air on planes is certainly not healthy. Take with you some essential oils with strong bactericide properties - Eucalyptus is especially good for the respiratory system.
  8. Half an hour before arrival inhale some of your wake up oil - place a few drops on a tissue or rub a little under your nose. Inhale deeply; rub the back of your neck, forehead and temples.
  9. When you arrive at your destination, combat jetlag by trying to fit into the new time zone straight away - have breakfast if it’s morning for example. Use a wake up/asleep oil for the first few days, inhaling when you’re tired or in need of a pick-me-up. You could also put a few drops on your pillow.
  10. Try and take a walk to help your circulation and feel refreshed

Enjoy your holiday!
